Hydrologic Risk, or «Erosion Risk», is defined as the likelihood of a category of loss (e.g. inundation, loss of physical structure or damaging of soil and crops) during a year. Hydrologic Risk is determined by combining the probability of exceeding a «critical» flow, which is defined as the annual flow required for a particular situation to be labeled as an «event» in a given year, and the expected value of the damage associated with that event.
“Event” is defined in this application by the properties of the river and conditions related to it such as the length of the stream, the basin slope, the basin elevation, and the maximum flood flow.
Flood flow is defined as the peak discharge that occurs at the mouth of the river during the flood peak.
The maximum flood flow represents the largest possible peak discharge that could occur in the basin. This is calculated by the formula (A × B) / A. A and B are the drainage area and the basin length, respectively.
