Joint Land Warfare Center officials believe they are on track to open the West Coast reconnaissance center in 2013.
The facility will be located at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., and will encompass the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). The center will focus on detecting and reporting information on a variety of airborne threats, including land-based and sea-based missiles and aircraft.
“Right now, we’re very near the beginning of the process,” center director Bret Vanuse of SPAWAR told the Columbia Tribune.
“We’re still in the open competitive [request for proposals] process with all the requirements that are necessary to fulfill our mission,” he said.
Vanuse, based at the Anniston Army Depot near Jacksonville, Ala., said the timeline is firm. An organization called a task force is being created that will include representatives from the Pentagon and the Army, and will be in charge of the project.
The local city council, which has a geographic jurisdiction of the proposed facility, has been briefed on the project, he said.
“We’ve got a plan for the [Columbia] Council, but we haven’t begun the process with them yet,” Vanuse said.
